Life, Love, and Death of a hobby

I fall in love with hobbies quickly. Over the years I’ve “collected” a number of hobbies and interests. But the first of them is fashion and it is the most special and identity-defining for me. That being said, even though many of my friends may know me as the “fashion guy”, I haven’t purchased any new clothes nor have I given much thought to fashion in recent years.

This post will look at a hobby’s life cycle and my thoughts around when a hobby approaches the end of its life.

Most people would say they aren't "into fashion" or don't "understand" fashion. However, they are likely conflating fashion and wearability.

Whether an item is fashionable or not is a function of the artistic merit of the item with consideration to the time and social context it was created.

Whether an item is wearable or not is a function of social context, physical comfort, and personal goals and values.

I’ve included some humourous examples to illustrate “fashion” and “wearability”.

This post inspired from a conversation with a friend around whether stockx sneakers that you pedestal and don’t wear can still be called fashion since they are literally not worn.
